Prof. Nachman Ash

Prof. Nachman Ash MD MS MA

Born in Israel 1961. Received his MD degree from Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University in 1986. Completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Sheba Medical Center in 1997.

In 2001 received MS degree in Medical Informatics from the Harvard-MIT Division of Health, Sciences and Technology, Boston, USA.

Prof. Ash has also a master’s degree in political sciences from the University of Haifa.

Prof. Ash has been a military physician for 25 years. He retired in the rank of Brigadier General on 2011, after completing intensive 4 years as the Surgeon General of the IDF.

Between Jan 2012 and July 2013 served as a senior Deputy Director General for Health Informatics in the Ministry of Health.

In 2013 Prof. Ash joined Maccabi Healthcare Services (MHS) as the chief Director of “Sharon” district. A year later he was promoted to be the Director of the Health Division of MHS, a position that he held until August 2020.

On Nov 2020 Prof. Ash was appointed to lead the national efforts to control the Covid-19 pandemic in Israel (nicknamed Covid-19 Tsar). Eight months later he was elected to be the Director General of the Ministry of Health, a position he held for a year and a half until the government change in January 2023.

Between June to November 2023 Prof. Ash was on loan to the OECD as a research consultant working on the impact of Artificial Intelligence on healthcare workforce. This period was cut short by the October 7th events in Israel.

Nachman Ash is an associate professor at Ariel University, the school of Health Sciences, the department of health systems management.
